Groovy, just another scripting language

17 Mar 2004

JSR-241: The Groovy Programming Language, I don’t really know what to think of that. I’ve always (actually always isn’t that long of a period) thought of Groovy as yet another scripting language. A hype in the blogosphere. So ok, you want the power of Ruby? Then use Ruby. You want to do some scripting using a Java-like syntax? Then use Beanshell. And since I read this discussion I know you can use pnuts too!

On one hand a standard is good. On the other hand, why make a standard out of something nothing more than a hype?

Richard and Hani, they both provide some good points. But in the end, do you really think that everybody (Java-developpers cause these, we, are the target audience) suddenly will drop their favourite scripting language (Ruby, Perl, Python, Beanshell, pnuts, …) and start using this groovy Groovy language? Only time will tell.

I like to use something else once in a while. Maybe I’ll even use Groovy in a couple of months?
